February 2026 Update

The Post-Windows 10 World:
Security, AI & Upgrades

It’s been 4 months since Microsoft pulled the plug on Windows 10 support. Here is what Canberra locals need to know about staying safe and the new “AI PC” requirements.

CRITICAL ALERT

Windows 10 is “Use at Your Own Risk”

4 min read

As of October 14, 2025, Windows 10 officially reached its “End of Life” (EOL). For the millions of users still holding onto the older operating system, this means no more security updates, no more bug fixes, and no more technical support.

What does this mean for you?

  • Banking Risk: Unpatched vulnerabilities make online banking on Windows 10 highly risky.
  • Software Incompatibility: New versions of Chrome, Office, and Adobe apps will soon stop supporting the OS.
  • No Firewall Updates: Your system is now open to new zero-day exploits discovered in 2026.

Local Note: We are seeing an increase in malware on older PCs in Gungahlin and Belconnen. If you are still on Windows 10, please disconnect from the internet or book an upgrade immediately.

The Rise of the “AI PC” & NPU Requirements

Windows 11’s latest “25H2” update has fully integrated Copilot AI into the core of the OS. However, many Canberra locals are finding their computers sluggish after the update. Why?

The answer lies in hardware. The new features rely heavily on a Neural Processing Unit (NPU). If your laptop is more than 3 years old, it likely lacks this chip, forcing your CPU to do all the heavy lifting, which drains battery and slows down performance.

Should you buy a new PC?

Not necessarily. While an NPU is great for local AI tasks, a fast NVMe SSD upgrade and a RAM boost (to 16GB min) can breathe new life into older laptops, making them Windows 11 ready without the cost of a new machine.

Fast Facts & FAQs

Is Windows 10 safe in 2026?

No. Since support ended in Oct 2025, it no longer receives security patches. It is highly vulnerable to viruses and identity theft.

Can my old laptop run Windows 11?

Usually, yes, if it has an 8th Gen Intel CPU (approx 2018) or newer. Older devices can sometimes be bypassed, but we recommend upgrading the SSD first.

How much does a Windows upgrade cost?

Tech Fixer offers a flat-rate service (plus parts if needed) to upgrade your OS onsite. We serve all areas including Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan.
