The "Remote Access" Phone Scam Targeting Canberra

Security Alert: Protect yourself from fake support calls.

Canberra seniors and residents are currently being targeted by a sophisticated phone scam. Here is how to spot it and what to do if you think you've been targeted.

The Script

You receive a call on your landline or mobile. The caller claims to be from "NBN Co", "Telstra", or "Amazon Security".

They will say something like:

  • "Your internet has been compromised by hackers."
  • "There is a suspicious purchase of an iPhone on your Amazon account."
  • "We need to refund you $500 but we need access to your computer to do it."

The Trap: Remote Access Software

They will ask you to download a program called TeamViewer, AnyDesk, or Zoho Assist. These are legitimate tools used by IT professionals (like us), but scammers use them to take control of your mouse and keyboard.

Warning: If you install this software and give them the code, they can see your screen and access your bank accounts.

What To Do

  1. Hang Up Immediately. NBN Co will never call you to fix your computer.
  2. Do Not Download Anything. If they ask you to go to a website, refuse.
  3. If you let them in: Turn off your computer immediately by holding the power button for 10 seconds. Unplug your internet router.

Think you've been compromised?

Don't turn your computer back on connected to the internet. Bring it to us or book a mobile technician. We will perform a forensic malware clean to ensure the scammers have no "backdoors" left on your system.
